Have you ever wondered what it means to know God as a Heavenly Father?
I confess to have wrestled with grasping this myself as a fatherless daughter. I mean, how do I build upon this concept of fatherhood when there was no strong foundation of fatherly care in the first place? At times it has felt like trying to construct something on my heart comprised of ruins and rubble.
I don’t know the whole story behind you and your father, but chances are he wasn’t a perfect reflection of God’s heart to you. But take hope, my friend. In Jesus Christ we have the perfect, Heavenly Father. A good, good Father.
One of my favorite songs about the father heart of God is Chris Tomlin’s hit, “Good, Good Father.” One powerful lyrics goes, “You are perfect in all your ways.” These lyrics vividly speak to me of the process that I have struggled to put into words at points in my fatherless journey. There has been pain. There has been and still are unanswered questions. However, above all else, I can sincerely declare that God is a perfect Father.
Indeed, God remains perfect in the pain and the process of a fatherless journey.
Over the years, I’ve learned to let the Holy Spirit give me an “eagle eye” for finding and memorizing Scriptures that specifically speak of God as a Father. It’s been beautiful to see the cohesive tapestry of God’s fatherly heart woven throughout the scriptures. Through searching the scriptures, I have begun to grasp three fundamental traits of God as a heavenly Father. They are easy to recall for those times I still struggle with feeling insecure, insignificant, or inadequate. Or just feeling fatherless, which is still no fun for this thirty-something soul of mine.
I like call these fatherly traits of God the 3 P’s. I’m convinced pondering these promises will empower us as woman with father wounds to move from a victim to victor mentality. So the next time, you and I feel the pangs of father wounds, let’s stop to ponder these 3 P’s about our perfect Father.
- Our perfect Father protects us. Indeed, God fiercely protects us from the attacks of our enemies, namely our chief one: Satan himself who wants to convince us that we are not safe and must barricade our hearts in self-protective means. However, 2 Thessalonians reassures us of God’s protection as it states, “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”
- Our perfect Father provides for us. God knows what we need before we even do, and He loves to respond to our prayers about our daily needs. Matthew 7:11 affirms God’s heart to be our provider as it states, “If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
- Our perfect Father pursues us. God is passionately initiates a relationship with us each day! Psalm 139: 3, 5 remind us of His constant pursuit: “You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all of my ways…You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.”
Indeed, God proves He is the perfect Father in His protection over us, His provision for us, and His pursuit of us each day.
May you and I remain anchored in the Father’s love as we consistently ponder His promises to protect, provide, and pursue.
Scripture to Savor: “But now, O Lord, You are our Father, we are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of your hand.” Isaiah 64:8
Reflect and Respond: How has your Heavenly Father protected you? How has your Heavenly Father provided for you?How does your Heavenly Father pursue you each day?
